Charlie's fierce gaze brought me back to the present as I stumbled out of Edward's lap dazily. It was incredible - the old man was so stubborn! I held Edward's hand for protection as I looked towards my father nervously. Would he denounce my freedom so soon?
"Bella, be careful." he muttered, glaring at Edward as we slowly crept towards the door. "No Seattle, remember? And your curfew is still in tact - ten-thirty, no later." He cast a strict glance at my boyfriend as we were about to disappear into the corridor. "No trouble, you hear me, young man?"
Edward nodded solemnly. He didn't realise it, but his eyes were smoldering again - I melted under them like warm butter. Pulling him along after me, I nodded to my father in goodbye, then trudged out into the dark with the pale boy following me eagerly. He was already in the driver's seat of the silver Volvo he'd driven to my home, strapped in and with the engine running, before I could step into the passenger door he'd opened for me.
"I wish Charlie would lighten up a little." I sighed as I tried to regain my regular breathing from Edward's amazing hues. I looked up at the indigo skies, shaking my head. "He doesn't understand it - and knowing him, he never will unless I tell him." I glanced at Edward, holding his hand as he pulled away from the drive. "It's always right there in front of him, and he still doesn't get it..."
Edward cast a worried expression at me. "Carlisle and Charlie are friends, but I don't think the vampires in Volterra would approve of us letting another human in on the secret..."
My eyes widened as I shook my head again, this time viciously towards the vampire that sat beside me. "Edward! I was talking about how he's so unaware that I am over eighteen years old - I can take care of myself." I squeezed his hand reassuringly as he drove silently towards his own house. I was so glad the Cullens were back... a new wave of relief pushed inside of me despite the thousands of times it had done before.
"Alice will be so pleased you're free." Edward murmured happily. "As I said before, she's been dying to go shopping with you - Rosalie's been tied up with Emmett since we've been home, fussing over their next honeymoon." I giggled nervously, my stomach secretly flipping at the word 'honeymoon'. It wasn't so long that Edward himself had proposed to me in my room... I felt dizzy as I recalled that blessed moment in his arms. But I still couldn't accept - though his offer tempted me that he would change me after marriage, I was pretty sure that I wasn't ready for it.
"Bella?" Edward asked anxiously. He reached for my shoulder, hugging me close as he drove. "Are you alright? What are you thinking?" He glanced at me lovingly. His eyes no longer smoldered but they still captivated and threw my heartbeats into chaos.
"Just thinking about..." I struggled to find the right words to tell him. I cast around in my mind, trying to capture the phrase I was looking for. "...Alice," I managed to lie in the end. I avoided his gaze so he couldn't see I was lying. "I've missed her too - it's been so long since I've seen her!"
"Not that long," Edward chuckled, and he pulled me closer as I let my head drop on to his shoulder. "You know, we should use those tickets Carlisle and Esme got for you on your eighteenth. I'm dying to see your mother..."
"She might die first," I warned him anxiously. Renee would certainly freak out when she saw Edward - it was impossible to tell why, though. She would either be close to throwing up with anger that he'd been the one to put me through so much trouble, or I'd kill her as she tried to embaress us with photos, hugs, kisses and more motherly things. I shuddered at the thought of it - I couldn't put Edward in the hands of her.
Edward laughed softly, and pressed his cold lips against my hair. My heart felt like it would flutter out of my chest, and I could feel his jaw twisting into a smile. "What are we going to do today?" he whispered through my hair. I excelled under his cold fingers on my chin, and realised only too quickly that he was almost standing up, not concentrating on driving. I watched the speedometer as an icy shock sped through me. It read one hundered and twelve miles per hour.
"Edward! Drive!" I screeched, my voice raising by two octaves. He wrenched himself away from me, frowning with disappointment. Inside, my heart dropped a few inches lower than it should do - or it felt like it. I'd wanted to stay like that forever...
"You didn't answer my question." Edward politely reminded me. His hand reached over to stroke my hair, and I knew he'd quickly regained confidence in his driving.
"I don't know. I assume we're going to your residence now?" I asked tentatively. Edward nodded, smiling once more. His eyes glittered with happiness, and I soon realised he was hiding something from me. Noticing I'd spotted his secretive smile, he shrugged his shoulders.
"Alice has been wanting to see you," he tried to disguise his expression. "I expect you'll be off shopping before we can step inside - trust me, Alice will be prepared."
I laughed quietly. Alice's uncanny ability to see the future that was set now still amazed me. Even though it could change according to the decisions of the person who was featured in the vision. I shuddered as I remembered not so long ago, when Alice and I were shooting across the sky in a large airplane to reach Italy, where Edward was soon to attempt to get the Volturi's hostile guards to kill him.
